Short story performance
I think I have found my performance niche... I don't really like performing poetry, don't like doing plays (never remember my lines) but reciting short stories... now that's my thing.
I hope I'm not rushing to conclusions here but I have a good feeling about it, plus I got some positive feedback. I just need to give it some positive attention and work on my craft a bit, get used to it, voice training and so forth and then i'm good to go, I think.
You might be wondering how I came to this judgement so here goes the story. I recently won second place in the Dominica Independence Literary Competition where I submitted a short story called Hair On My Chest. The prize giving ceremony was tonight and as part of the showcase, the awardees had to recite an excerpt from their story and let's just say i really enjoyed myself on stage.
The video may not impress you but I have truly come a long way and I am confident that if I devote some time and energy to it, I can get a lot better. Anyway, you be the judge. The video isn't the best quality, I used my trusted blackberry phone so listen closely.

I have already secured a second performance and will be at the Anchorage Hotel on Thursday 17th November, 2011 as part of Word, Sound and Power - Teen Expression.
See you there!

Poetry meet Roseau Market, Roseau Market meet Poetry
The Roseau Market is always a bustling environment of onlookers, buyers and sellers looking for the freshest of quality fruits and vegetables on a Saturday morning in the small city of Roseau.
However on that particular Saturday, there was something "new" at the market place, as the smooth sounds of pan music and poetry elevated above all the hustling and bustling. The Poetry and Book Exchange had been organized as an outreach activity of the Nature Island Literary Festival to expand the audience of the festival in the hopes of drawing larger crowds to the University Centre in Dominica.
The reason I am babbling about the activity on my blog is because I actually performed/read poems from my upcoming book at the market. I did three poems from my first and soon to be released poetry book One Room Shack: The Dominican Gift, These Words and one of my favourites Can I, a piece centered on attracting the opposite sex...
It had been almost a year since my last poetry reading and although I was a bit nervous I did my best and followed that up with a reading at the Literary Festival of The Kalinago Girl... Expect more readings from me soon as I am getting the hang of it... who knows maybe one day you may just catch a video clip of one of my readings on my site...
Be one the look out! Remember you were cautioned, lol... oh and I did walk away with a number of books, had to take part in the book exchange too, but off course!

I'm Stuck: Crossroads
Ever been stuck doing something and you couldn't figure out why and there was no reason in your mind. Well what started out as a situation where I couldnt understand my mental block ended up in my newest of poems. Although the reason I got stuck isn't really the theme of the poem but it addresses difficult, mental and physical "crossroads".
Stuck
I’m stuck
Between this rock and a hard place
I’m stuck
Which direction do I take?
I’m stuck
Left or right, back or forth
I’m stuck
East, west, north or south
I’m stuck
Running out of time, running out of luck
I’m stuck
This seems so right though I know it’s wrong
I’m stuck
Should I tell or just remain mute?
I’m stuck
Maintain the lie or tell the truth
I’m stuck
Because what I need is not what I want
I’m stuck
Now I refuse to choose, refuse to move
I’m stuck
Oh help me for I’m still confused
I’m stuck
Asking for, but refusing the help
I’m stuck
I; my own worst enemy, still my own best friend
I’m stuck
My insecurities will ruin my strength
I’m stuck, yes I’m stuck
I’m stuck
Between this rock and a hard place

I’m stuck
Which direction do I take?
I’m stuck
Left or right, back or forth
I’m stuck
East, west, north or south
I’m stuck
Running out of time, running out of luck

My insecurities will ruin my strength
I’m stuck, yes I’m stuck

Poetry session at Bath Estate
I (the one in red and black below) haven't performed any of my poems since the National Literary Festival in Dominica last year, not because i was keeping away from performances but the timing of the sessions always coincided with some other activity that i had to do.This time it did clash with a calypso show, but i decided that since it was in my home community that i couldnt shy away from performing and i was glad that i had the opportunity to share my craft with fellow poets, community members and onlookers.
My second showing of the night went alot better than the first, by that time i had gotten over my nerves and after seeing performances by Alpha Dennis and others had grown in confidence and just let my poems out much to the delight of the crowd. My first time in front of the crowd i delivered more reflective poetry (see timely reflections in a previous post) and the second time around i delivered two of my favourite love poems.
But the night wasn't about me, it was about developing a friendship with other poets, some of whom i had already known and others very new to me. I can still picture Miss Kimasha Sylvester performing Eat It, a piece that recieved a standing ovation and an encore performance. It had the crowd laughing and calling out for more. Overall, the ambiance was very good with our hostess going above and beyond showering the crowd with jokes, gifts and even her own thoughtful poems.
The crowd started rather small but very appreciative and grew as the night got darker and at the end we had what could be referred to as a full house, although we
were actually in the yard of Mrs. Shawna Johnson, fellow poet and our hostess for the night.

Poetry performance is not a mainstream event in Dominica but that may not be for very long if we, present crop of up and coming poets, have our way, be on the look out...
