Why Are You Still Single?

So Delroy, Why are you still single?
By Nesta (because Delroy would never write this)

They're all asking
So Delroy, why are you still single?
Why? Because I won't settle
Not for less than I deserve
Or Delroy, are you just running around?
To that I reply, Hell No!
Single isn't the status that I want
Wife with two children, a house and a dog
Maybe a cat and definitely some fish
Being single isn't my wish!
Delroy, you know you're getting old?
Hurry up, just pick somebody, already!
But who? Just anybody?
I know what I want and from whom to find it
But she keeps looking way past me
And because of who I am and what I see in her, I keep on waiting
But Delroy, just love anybody in the meantime
Nah, that feels like a waste of my time
I will only give my love to one more person in my lifetime,
The next will be the last
And after that, if it doesn't work out?
Then fine, I'm prepared to take that chance!

Something About Nesta

by Delroy Nesta Williams

There something about me
That I can't put my finger on
I'm hoping that you can tell me
Release me of this mystery
That keeps me up at night
I can't seem to get things right
I talk a good talk
But when I'm around her
I mess up all my words
I get so damn nervous
And hours later
When I'm all alone
I figure out all the right things I wanted to say
And every sentence that she uttered
Stayed etched in my brain
And plays over and over, like a gospel refrain
Honestly, she has the most beautiful of smiles
Formed by those beauty-full lips
That sometimes part ways
To let out that simple giggle
The one that makes me weak in the knees
She has that twinkle in her eyes when she speaks
She calls me all kind of names
Babes, luv, boy, and even bae
But I prefer when she raises her voice
And shouts Delroy Nesta Williams
Then I know to drop everything that I'm doing
And give her my full attention
Because nothing is as important
As giving her my everything
But her silence can also be as deafening
Like when she doesn't say anything
For hours at a time
Especially when I need her cool confidence to soothe my wondering mind
She's like love music blowing in the wind
On a rainy, cold night
She's the new moon's light
That eastern village that welcomes the sunrise
The beach that greets the low tide's wave
She just knows what to say
And exactly when I need to hear it
"Do I have to be spelled out?" she asked,
Sensing that I needed the reassurance
She's always giving off that allure
And if there's something wonderfully different about Nesta
Know that it is her!

Giving Up

Giving Up
By Delroy Nesta Williams

I've become the very thing I hate!
A slave to your acceptance
I've had enough of it all
I'm no longer seeking your approval
I'm raging against the machine that you've become...
Or maybe I'm flying the white flag
Yup, that's it, I give up
Been chasing shadows for much too long
You hide in the dark of the night
And still so elusive in the light
Cutting my losses while I can
I'm tired of wishing in the wind
This could very well be a blessing in disguise
So no more compromise
Or turning the other cheek
Sometimes you just gotta accept defeat
Life isn't always what you wish it
Especially if you're always forced to swim upstream
Every day a battle to belong
Takes a toll on the soul
In the long run,
That can break the will of a man
Life has a funny way of teaching you a lesson
But from dust I came, so to dust I shall return!

Life

By Delroy Nesta Williams and Dionne Francis

There’s something I’ve been wondering
Wondering from the day of my birth
What’s my purpose here on earth?
From a younging, I’ve been questioning
And no one's willing to provide the answer
I’m feeling like I’m searching for the unknown,
Someone lend me a compass,
Help me in the right direction.
Though in my mind I’m still wondering
If it'll be the right direction
What if it’s advice derived from an imagination?
What if the answer does not meet up to my satisfaction?
I just started my route but I wonder if it’s going to be rocky, curved or straight at the end
Is there a heavenly gate?
Some say at the end you see the light
Will my quest be easy or do I have to put up a fight?
I feel like I'm heading towards self-destruction
Like I'm about to drink this concoction,
Leading to suicide,
A fate from which I just can't hide
What about all my hopes and dreams?
I’m simple tired of this frustrating reality
Should I really take the next step and jump?
Will I crash and burn to the floor
Or suddenly develop wings of an angel and soar?
Fly through the sky and look at the world from the clouds,
Suddenly my life has no bounds,
I can do all that i put my mind too,
It's like I've suddenly discovered superpowers,
A means to and end of my struggles
I know it's all a risk
But it's one I’m willing to take
I need to differentiate between what's real and what's fake
My life feels like pieces of a puzzle scattered
Like some sort of a brain teaser to put together
I often ask myself "am I in my right mind?"
But is there even a wrong mind?
Am I not supposed to make my own decisions?
From today I am on a new mission.
No more stressing,
Or seeking answers without asking the right questions
Need to understand who I am,
Before I find my place within the master's plan,
Or is it the other way around?
Now I am even more confused and feeling dumb...
Life is really a maze,
Getting through it depends on the steps you take
And one wrong decision of the past,
Can lead to you being miles off track.
But never stop running, never stop moving,
Because that's when the situation overwhelms you,
And you find yourself in a world of trouble.
But in the end it's all worth it,
You can look back at your life and say "hey, I’ve made it"
You may not get to the finish line looking perfect,
But once you get to end you will realize
All the bullshit was time well spent.

Follow Me

Follow me
Delroy N. Williams

I hated days like these; why can’t I just be allowed to do my work and not have to attend these boring meetings. A bunch of policy makers beating their chests boasting of things they haven’t spent a minute to address coupled by technicians who think too highly of themselves, waiting for the opportune minute to make a smart comment. These are just grandiose occasions for men who love to hear themselves speak, plain and simple. But I would have to attend this time around, my supervisor was sick and since I was the one directly working on the project anyway, I would have to sit in on his behalf.

To make it worst, I was running late and the Dominican weather was at its worst. A brutal shower had cornered me on Cork Street, just opposite Perky’s Pizza with no umbrella. I really wished I had a car but since the accident two years ago the weekend of the World Creole Music Festival, I had decided to ease up on the driving. It was healthier too, especially since I worked just a few minutes from my home. A walk from home to work was just the exercise I needed every day. I had become a couch potato and my disappearing abs were not too fond of this new hobby. Television had become my refuge after work.

The rain had subsided a bit now and I decided to make a dash for it, I still had to venture halfway across Roseau to the Public Service Training Centre, an office space just above the General Post Office. As I stepped away from the sidewalk, a black Pajero IO sped down the street, dashing the contents of a pothole unto my pants

“A lang bodah” I shouted before my mind caught up to my mouth. Now that really hurt, I had spent all morning ironing my favourite dress pant only now for it to be all soaked. It looked like I had peed my pants but I couldn’t return home now, I would be too late. I wouldn’t want to venture into the meeting towards the end of the opening ceremony as that would look to bad, especially since the Minister for Community Development was expected to be there. She hated me and I would give her no reason to reprimand me. She had already refused to sign my mileage allowance a few times this year and another showdown would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

So now my pants were soaked and my shirt lightly wet from the drizzle. What a morning I was having I thought as I made my way up the stairs of the Centre.

“They could have invested in an elevator,” I thought as I started panting, “it’s getting harder and harder to climb these damn steps every time.”

I opened the door to find the halls empty, except for the desk clerk who was busy on the phone talking to God knows who at this hour.

“A morning beff?” I asked to get her attention.

“Yes! And how may I help you Sir” she replied as she smiled that smile that meant that I should mind my business.

“Can I have a tissue or a towel, please?”

“Check de canteen area!”

“Has it been long since the meeting started?”

“No, not long ner!” she scolded in a tone that meant that I was keeping her from her Monday morning telephone ritual.

Whoever it was on the phone surely does speak loudly. I could hear the harsh Marigot accent from a few metres away. The beff seemed very interesting though as the clerk continued to laugh, turning her back to me. I could have walked out with everything in the canteen for all she cared.  I threw the wet tissue into the small garbage bin that was just inside the swinging door of the clerk’s workspace and then ventured into the Meeting Room. It sounded very quiet as I approached but as I opened the room the Minister’s voice rose to give me an instant headache.

“We need to create an environment where our children can feel safe to go out and recreate… we also need to provide recreational facilities that meet the needs and wants of our children. We need to internalize the words of that song from Tasha P Let the children be Children, let them play” the Minister screeched, as if speaking to a room full of party supporters or illiterates. It was always painful to hear her damage the English language like that, placing emphasis on wrong syllables.

I scurried to take the only available seat left, trying my best not to make a sound. I opened the folder in front of me only to realize that the opening ceremony was coming to a close. So much for trying to make it to the meeting early. I now looked up and across the long table, the room was filled with colleagues; every media outlet was also present. It really did have the atmosphere of a party convention, even the Minister was fully clad in one of her customary red outfits, and off course fully complimented with six-inch heels. She may not give the best speeches or even know what she was talking about most of the time but she always dressed for the occasion. I often wondered if her husband had a say in her outfits. She does seem to have a keen fashion sense, well at least in comparison with other women in the political arena. She had a bright smile today and a certain level of confidence that even seemed to attract my attention.

“Oh my God,” I thought, “I have a thing for de Minister.”

I quickly shook that thought from my head as I continued to circle the room with my eyes. Out of the corner of my eye though, I saw this young lady. She looked like a reporter as she scribbled notes unto this yellow pad.

“She doesn’t have a recorder?” I questioned as I looked at her hands. They were so tiny but her nails were so long. The acrylic was beautifully done, almost all the colours of the rainbow, matching her sundress. A sundress in this rainy weather; what a bold statement! She looked a lot more expensively clothed than her salary should be able to afford. I continued to study her with my eyes, my thoughts getting more interest with every passing minute. She looked up after a few minutes and caught me steering.

“Hi!” she smiled.

“Uhmm, hi,” I responded almost caught off guard. Her voice was soft and sweet, she must work in radio.

She turned back towards her writing pad and continued to scribble some points so I turned away, not wanting to be caught staring again. But I kept peeking out of the corner of my eye, just so that I was aware of what she was doing. How did she look so good? Obviously, she didn’t walk to the Centre. There was no hint of rain or any disturbance in here attire. And that beauty mark jus below her left eye couldn’t be real, could it!

And just then she looked up at me again, with a slight smile and whispered, "can I squeeze your nipple?"

"Yes, but off course!" I replied, almost too eagerly that made her back off but just for a short while.

"I didn't expect that reply," she replied stifling a soft laugh.

"So does that mean you weren't serious then?" I asked, almost disheartened that I had killed the moment with my eagerness.

“Oh I'm very serious but I was expecting some resistance!”

“So I should have pretended to not want it?”

“I'm not sure but something like that; I just want to touch it though”
“Should I just lean forward and let you do it then?”

“Let's save it for later!”

“Later when?” I questioned.

“During the break!” she confirmed, getting up to walk away, swaying her round hips from left to right. My eyes followed her every move as she disappeared behind the door. It took me a while to realize that she was actually inviting me to follow her. I was hoping that nobody else took notice to what had just transpired, as this nervous excitement filled my body. I tried to stand up but could hardly move my legs. They were stuck to the floor.

“Not now!” I thought, as the fear of the situation became more and more evident. I placed my hands to the table and forced myself up. The table shifted and squeaked as I made my way up.

“Sorry, excuse me!” I belted out as the room turned to look at me.

Even the Minister had looked my way and I motioned with hand and head in an apologetic way that it wasn’t my fault. My exit from the room was swift. The door closed quietly behind me as I looked out. The clerk wasn’t at her desk and that suited me fine as I jetted across the hall.

“But where did the reporter disappear to?” I questioned, “She couldn’t have gone too far in such a short space of time.”

The only possible place she could have gone was down the stairs or into the washroom. I motioned towards the washroom; I had to take that chance. I put my ears against the door and listened. I heard the knock of heels against the tiled floor. I pushed the door open slightly as I peaked inside the room; the water was flowing from a faucet. I stepped in a bit further to see her washing her hands.

‘sorry for disturbing you in here but I have a question that just couldn’t wait until you came back,”

“What is it?” she asked as she closed the tap and walked towards me in a slow, subtle way that screamed out to my loins.

“Honestly, I don’t even know. I just wanted to be alone with you.”

“Why? You must have a reason to want to be in the women’s washroom, alone with me,” she replied as she stroked my chest with her index finger ensuring that I felt the nail dig into my flesh. My nipples responded fully erect. She had such an effect on me, almost without doing a thing.

“Well… I, I, I, I wanted to…” I studded

“Wanted to what?”

“I don’t know how to say it,”

“Just open your mouth and speak the words, that should be enough,” she murmured, as she rested her hips against mine and twirled around me. She now stood behind me and grabbed my waist.

She began biting my ear lobe as her hands ran up and down my chest, almost tearing through my shirt.

“What if someone comes in here?” I hissed as she gave me a harder bite, this time to the back of my neck.

“Let them see,” she joked, pushing me towards the toilet stalls. I kicked the door open as we both entered and I turned towards her. I motioned towards her and lay my first kiss upon her lips, they were so soft, felt like they’ve never been kissed before. That apple lip gloss gave me the feeling to rip her lips off as she lay soft bites against my lips pulling at them with her teeth. She was unbuttoning my shirt and digging her nails into my chest, even pulling against my chest hairs. This young lady was awakening every inch of my body with her touch.  I began to lift her dress when she suddenly stopped.

“What’s wrong?” I asked softly hoping that I didn’t just ruin everything.

“Don’t do anything, let me just please you!” she demanded as she placed the toilet seat down. She reached for my belt and with one jerk removed it from my pant and unzipped the zipper. She grabbed my penis and held it for a while.

“At least somebody isn’t shy!” she remarked. I was about to answer when she placed her finger over my mouth.

“Shhhhhhhhh, don’t ruin the moment, please” pushing me down unto the toilet seat. She grabbed my dick out of my boxers and started t massage it, up and down with a rhythm that had me panting for breath. Her hands were so moist, I guess she really washed those hands well. I could see the veins on my dick bulging out like the vessels were about to burst open. I had never noticed them so engorged before, but the truth is I had never paid them much attention during sex. She leaned me against the water tank with her left hand then bent over and placed her lips unto my head, leaving a soft kiss. She smiled and winked at me and for the first time I could tell that she was fulfilling her fantasy as well as mine. Her tongue then enveloped my penis, encircling the bulbed top while using her hands to stroke me up and down. She had such pulse to her movement. I could barely maintain myself, closing my eyes so that I could contain my emotion. She then forced my dick towards the back of her throat and it was just too much to hold in anymore.

“Uhhhhhhhhh,” I squealed.

By now she wasn’t concerned about my noises and she just laughed out and continued. She then removed her panty, spread her legs over me and as she bowed down unto me she placed the silk black underwear into my face. I breathed in the heavenly, sweet aroma as it touched my lips and tongue. I could feel my penis entering her vagina at that same moment, so moist but still so very warm, as she straddled my hips pinning me unto the toilet seat. With one hand holding the back of my neck, the other still with the underwear in my face almost strangling me she continued to ride me, up and down, up and down. One band of sweat was rolling down her face unto her neck as she seemed in her element. She enjoyed sex, I could tell by the look in her eye. She wanted to please me. I could feel the eruption coming but I didn’t want it to end soon. I looked up to the ceiling in a desperate attempt of a prayer and as I did I saw a spider. I turned my attention to it, hoping that as I focused on the spider that my body would calm down but it was too late.

“Baby, baby, I’m about to cum!!!!!!!!” I yelled.

And almost in a succinct movement, she jumped up from on top of me, and allowed my eruption to converge with the walls of her mouth. I trembled away with the sweat now swimming down my forehead and chest as she sucked every last bit of cum off from my penis. I couldn’t move but she raised herself up and fixed her dress. She smiled at me, cum still in her mouth, leaned towards me and laid a soft kiss on my forehead.

“You were exactly what I needed, thank you!” she said and she turned around. I remained motionless in the stall as I heard the water flowing from the faucet. A few minutes later the door opened and she left. I still wasn’t able to muscle until she had probably been gone for about five minutes. I was no longer sweating and had controlled my breathing as I stood up, pulled up my pants and put on my belt. As I exited the washroom, the clerk was going toward her work station.

“you went into the wrong washroom, sir!” she scolded.

“Sorry, I hadn’t even noticed,” I apologized.

“Don’t let it happen again,” she emphasized as though she actually meant something else.

I paid her no mind though as I hopped, skipped and jumped across the hall and back into the Meeting Room. The young lady was still there as I took my seat. Almost simultaneously, she raised up from her chair and handed me a small paper bag.

“Don’t open it until I leave,” she whispered and as before she swung her hips from left to right, like she was moving to a cadence song from Exile One and exited the room. I looked down at the small bag, looked around to see if anyone was paying attention then opened it. There was a note. It read, “it was a one-time thing, don’t get any ideas! Thank you though; it was a very good 5-minute experience.”

The paper bag also contained the black silk underwear. I closed it back, and with a huge smile opened up the bag again and inhaled deeply.

“No, thank you I thought.”

Delroy and Nesta

Delroy and Nesta
by Delroy Nesta Williams

I’m caught in a dilemma
Cause she loves Delroy but not Nesta
She loathes the silent observer but loves the hard worker
Wants to see my actions but not listen to the poetic words I utter
My Lady likes the fact that I work with youth and toil the soil
But, can’t understand why I spend hours just writing
The poetry, the short stories
To her it’s a waste of my energies
She would prefer if I gave her that consideration
And not write poems that capture other women’s attention
She’s the jealous type that wants to be noticed
Delroy is aware but Nesta just doesn’t know this
So I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place
Cause Delroy comes with Nesta’s baggage
She sees it as excess garbage
So how do I split the two?
To her they’re so different
But in my eyes, Nesta is Delroy’s compliment
She just doesn’t understand
You can’t have one without the other
So should I even bother?
I just can’t choose between the two
They’re one in the same person
Not even an alter ego
Just an extension of me, like a shadow
To have Delroy, Nesta has to be valued
She thinks that Nesta is just fantasy
She needs to face my reality,
Delroy and Nesta is simply me.
To her Delroy is simply the loud confident type
And Nesta barely speaks his mind
Nesta is grounded while Delroy is the dreamer
She sees a future with Delroy but not Nesta
And it frustrates both of me
Because I can’t help her
To see both sides of me
The sweet, innocence of the poet
Versus the out-going, overbearing show off
That Delroy has become
Delroy has become too much
In comparison to Nesta; surplus
But getting rid of one will leave me inadequate
And then she will find a void in me that nothing else can fill
So she better learn to love us two
It’s either that or I’m out the door like yesterday’s news.
Lady, welcome to my world or just don’t enter the door
Because like it or not, you’re stuck with Delroy Nesta

A gift for Junie

by Delroy Nesta Williams

Mr. Lazare kept inviting me over to his house; it had become our weekly ritual. At first, he would simply give me a few chores to do and give me a wage but recently we talked a lot more. He told me about his pursuits in England, how he fought in World War II, worked in a train station and married a beautiful “English Rose” before returning to Dominica in 1975 because he could no longer bear the cold weather.

“I came back to Gros Michel to live out my last days,” he often said. “There was no reason for me to stay in England anymore.” I later found out that his wife had passed away after a horrific car accident a few years before he came back to Dominica and the “rum assisted in his grieving,” as he often put it.

There was a lot more to Mr. Lazare than I had ever imagined, he had become more than just a neighbour to me now. We would often read books together and he even allowed me to play his recorder. But it was his stories of the war, England and his advice that I respected most. I could almost imagine myself besides him in pursuit of the Nazis or taking cover when his camp was being bombarded with enemy fire. He even showed me a bullet wound, in his right shoulder. The bullet had damaged the tendons and muscles in his should which made it almost impossible for him to carry any load. He made the war sound horrific but still very exciting.

He had lied about his age so that he could have gotten recruited, having ended up in England without a birth paper or any documents.

I also remembered him telling me how he won the love of Mrs. Lazare, when he was in the mood to talk. He told me how he would spend hours at the train station just waiting for her to pass by for a few seconds. He would wait at the Southampton Central Railway at precisely 3:00 p.m. every day when he knew she would make an appearance, albeit for a few minutes before the train came and whisked her away.

He would put his pipe in his mouth, draw in some tobacco, take a sip of his drink and commence a dramatic description of her school days and how she looked so smartly dressed in her uniform.

“Young man,” he would say, “she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and I still haven’t seen anyone as beautiful as her in my eighty five years of existence.” He was much younger than that though, as I found out later. He wasn’t one to share his actual age.

“She was a lot younger than me but that didn’t matter at all, I just loved how she looked so positive, so royal in her uniform. It’s almost like she expected the world to lay down a red carpet for her, but not in an obnoxious way, she walked with the grace of the Queen of England herself, but was still very polite.”

“Once, I had deliberately bumped into her and even before I could offer an apology, she was already requesting my forgiveness. She then smiled at me while leaving, I was more in love with her after that,” he continued.

Today, I had my own issues of the heart though and maybe it showed a lot more than I had imagined. But then again, Mr. Lazare could always read my mind.

“Young man, what’s wrong? You seem so distant” he asked.

“Nothing ner,” I replied.

“We speak the Queen’s English in this house,” he remarked, “and I can tell that you’re lying. Talk to me, son.”

I could tell that he was sober, that was the only time he stressed on the proper use of English. He could care less when he was under the influence.

“It’s a girl,” I said softly.

“I can tell, it could only be a girl.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s written all over your face, L-O-V-E: love,” he said pointing to my forehead, “you’re glowing like a firefly on a dark night. But I still see trouble in your eyes.”

“It’s my girlfriend; her birthday is coming up soon.”

“Girlfriend,” he said surprisingly, “How old are you?”

“Sixteen,” I confidently replied.

“Oh, that’s the same age that I had my first girlfriend and my first kiss too,” Mr. Lazare said as he gazed away, “I was still in Dominica back then. So what’s the problem?”

“Well………..” I mumbled.

“If you want my help then you need to speak up.”

“I want to get her a gift but I don’t have any money and I still don’t know what she would like.”

“Then you do have a problem!”

“Yes sir.”

“So when was she born?

“June 17”

“And do you know what her birthstone is?”

“What’s that?”

“Don’t they teach anything in school these days?” he remarked, “A birthstone is a precious gemstone that symbolizes the birth month of someone in the Gregorian calendar. It is usually associated with character.”

“Gregor what?

“Gregorian Calendar,” he said distinctly, “it is the calendar that we use today, January to December; it wasn’t always the calendar”

“It wasn’t?”

“No boy, no, it was introduced by Pope Gregory long ago but that’s a different story. If she was born in June then her birthstone would be the same as my wife, she was born in June too.”

“Okay.”

“Wait here, I have something that you can give to her.”

I could hear Mr. Lazare rummaging through his room; the chest of drawers I imagined. I had never been inside his room, it was his private sanctuary. Things were been shifted, falling on the wooden floor.

“What could it be?” I wondered, “Did it have to do with the birthstone?

Mr. Lazare spent about ten more minutes before he reappeared, sweat all over his forehead.

“May I have a glass of water?” he politely asked. He looked liked he would drop down dead any moment if I wasn’t quick enough.

“What was he doing in there?” I thought to myself, “he looks like he just revisited World War II.” The only difference is he had no war apparel, no rifle and he had a big grin from ear to ear.

“What’s with the smile?

“I found it”

“What?” I asked eager to find out.

“Before I hand it over to you, you have to promise me that you will do it justice, give it to this Junie girl only if you truly love her. I gave it to my wife for her birthday over twenty years ago,” He said as his voices continued to break up, “I’m passing it on to you because I don’t have much time left here and I can see you truly like this girl. I can see the same passion I had when I first met my wife in you.”

“Thank you, I promise but what is it?” I asked reluctantly, not wanting to anger him with my impatience.

“I’m getting to that, don’t rush me.” I could see it was hard for him. “This is a necklace, touched with Alexandrite. I got the stone from a villager in Russia when I was fighting the war. I had it formed into a necklace in England for my wife’s birthday. I think she would want me to pass it on to someone I trust. She would approve.”

“Thank you but may I ask you a question?”

“Yes, you may.”

“What exactly is Alexandrite?” I asked reluctantly, “Is it the birthstone?”

“Oh yes, it is. But there’s more to it than just that.”

“More?”

“Yes, put on the light bulb,” he said, “and see the magic as it happens.” To my amazement the rock changed colour from green to red.

“Oh, I see, now I’m sure Junie will like that.” Mr. Lazare just smiled and sat down.

“Something’s wrong?” I asked

“No, no, I’m just tired but you remind me so much of myself when I was a young boy”

“Me?”

“Yes, boy, you… I am sure you will make a fine young man one day, your mother will be proud.” And with that Mr. Lazare leaned back into his rocking chair, put his pipe into his mouth and picked up a book.

“What are you reading?’ I asked.

“Oh it’s nothing, just some Shakespeare.”

“Oh I know Shakespeare,” I replied proudly, “we study him in Literature classes, but he writes funny. I never understand him”

“Maybe you should read it funny then,” Mr. Lazare said as he gave a wry grin and continued reading. I could tell he no longer wanted to be disturbed so I moved to the shelf and picked up a book too.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m taking a book; I want to read Shakespeare too.”

“Okay, well read then.”

I didn’t really want to read, I was just looking for a comment or two from him but he was so enthralled in his reading that he wouldn’t budge from his rocking chair even if I had caught the house on fire. After pretending to read for about ten minutes, I decided to leave, it was getting late and I didn’t want my mother screaming her guts out at me again; I had heard enough of that to last me a lifetime. I picked up the necklace; it felt so cool in between my fingers, like it was being stored in a refrigerator. The gemstones kept changing colours.

“Junie going an love me for that wii,” I thought to myself. Mr. Lazare made my day, my month, and my teenage years. I would always be a part of her life now; she would remember that moment all her life. It was going to be perfect; she would tell it to her children and her children’s children. I was going to be a part of her history, forever etched in her memory. But almost on cue, I was brought back to earth by Mr. Lazare.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself young man; it’s only a gift,” he said, “but it’s still a special gesture.”

“I know, I know,” I replied, while not trying to give away the excitement bubbling within my stomach.

Mr. Lazare was too smart for that though; he saw clearly what was going on. I was getting ahead of myself but he wanted me to be humble and modest about the gift.

“I have to head home now, it’s getting late,”

“I know, just lock the gate when you are out the yard,” he joked. I had to give a soft laugh because the gate didn’t keep anyone out; half of the fence was missing. I don’t think he worried too much about the villagers entering his yard or his house. It looked dilapidated from the street. The residents of Gros Michel had no idea of the treasures that he possessed within those rundown walls.
